LIST OF MATERIALS

  • Domino- either bleached or not or any kind of game piece you want to use.
  • Clear Full Sheet Labels Avery #8665
  • Clip art
  • Workable Fixative
  • Mod Podge (optional) or Future floor finish (optional) or Crystal Lacquer
  • Krylon marker in color to go with design.
  • Any computer application that will allow you to arrange your clip art to the size of your domino (or game piece). Some applications are Printshop Deluxe, Adobe Photoshop, or Adobe Photoshop Elements. A JPG of clip art can be found in the OSA Classes files for those who do not have this type of application and still wish to participate.

STEP ONE -

This technique can be used on any game piece with a flat surface. We
are using a domino for this class .

- Select the images that you want to use on your game piece.
- Resize the images to fit on your game piece. Make the image about 1/8 larger than the game piece so that you can trim it to fit. This takes some practice. I fill a page with images, either the same image multiple times or different images. This way I have them on hand for a quick project and it doesn't waste the label sheet.
- If you are using triangular or other-shaped dominos, I would set up a page of clip art on the computer and pick art that has a center focus that you like. I would print the label with more of the picture than I need and then pick the part of the label that I want to use. Place the tri-omino or whatever shape that you have onto the label with the clip art. Trace around the tile piece and then cut the label out. Fit to tile piece and voilà you will have a different look. I am going to try it on the glass slides as soon as I get a chance.
- Print out your images on plain paper and place on game piece to make sure you have sized the images properly. The labels are costly. In my area I bought them at Staples and they only had a package with 25 sheets. I can't remember how much I paid but I gasped when I saw the price. The package last forever and is well worth the price. I use the labels to print quotes and pictures for ATCs and many other stamping projects so they are very versatile.

- You can drill holes in the domino or add a bead to the top to use in a necklace. You can add a pin back. If you are drilling holes in your piece then do that before you do any art work. I have broken many a domino while drilling. You can drill either front to back, or edge to edge. These dominos look great used on the front of cards. You can do the same technique on any game piece. Rummikubs are great because they are thin and can be used on ATCs. The possibilities are endless.

STEP TWO -

Take the clip art label and cut it about 1/8 larger than the domino that you are using.

Step #2

STEP THREE -

Take the back off the label.

Step #3

STEP FOUR -

Place the image on the top of the domino. If you don't get it right the first time, take it off and reposition it to where you want it. The label is very forgiving. You may also find it easier to lay the clip art sticky side up on the table, and position the domino over it.

Step #4

STEP FIVE -

Trim the clip art to fit the domino. I do this by turning the domino so the clip are is facing down. I take my scissors and hold them straight up and down next to the domino so that I get a nice square cut. I tried using an Exacto knife to trim the label to fit and it "chewed" the edges of the clipart so it looks nasty. Try a new blade if you are trying this. I like using scissors.

Step #5

STEP SIX -

Trim the sides of the domino.

Step #6

STEP SEVEN -

Trim the corners. Hold the scissors straight, and turn the domino. Smooth out the clip art after trimming. If you have a front to back drilled hole in the domino, turn the domino so that the clip art is face down and stick a pin in the hole until it puts a pin hole in the clip art. Turn the domino over and put something through the hole that will smooth the edges.

Step #7

STEP EIGHT -

Spray the top of the domino very sparingly with the workable fixatif. This dries very quickly. Do this step in a well ventilated area. I did mine outside. You may skip this step if you like, and your final finish doesn't make the printer inks run. Test it first!

Step #8

STEP NINE -

Take a Krylon pen in the color that best works with your image and color the top edges of the domino and then the sides. I overlap the pen a tiny bit so that you can see the color on the edge of the image.

Step #9

STEP TEN -

When dry spray again with the workable fixatif. When you finish spraying this time, hold the can upside down and spray the nozzle. This will clean out the nozzle so that next time there won't be any gunk in it. Such exacting words. :)

Step #10

STEP ELEVEN -

Next apply Mod Podge, Future Floor Finish or Crystal Lacquer. I am applying Future Floor Finish in step 11. Let dry. You can leave the domino with just the workable fixatif if you like. It depends if you are wearing the domino in jewelry or using the domino as ephemera. If you are wearing it you will want a lasting finish.

Step #11

2 Mod Podge, 2 Future Floor Finish, Workable Fixative only
