Kimono Chopsticks Wrapper

Kimono Chopsticks by Sonia Evans

by Sonia Evans

Materials needed:

  • Origami paper or Washi paper
  • Paper cutter
  • Lightweight metallic gold cardstock Ruler
  • Tombow Mono Adhesive (or similar adhesive)
  • Pencil
  • Mizuhiki cord--coordinating color
  • 2 medium sized decorative chopsticks

Directions:
Kimono:
1. Cut a strip of origami or washi paper 6 inches by 11 inches. You can adjust measurements according to the size of the chopsticks you have to wrap.

2. Place paper design face down and portrait style. Draw horizontal lines at 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch from the top.

3. Fold down along the 1/4 inch line so that the pattern side shows. Fold again along the 1/2 inch line. Fold back about 1/16 inch, just enough to see a white strip above the collar you just made. Keep this part folded and facing down to do the next step. Do not turn paper over yet.

4. Draw a horizontal line 3 1/2 inches from the bottom. Fold bottom up along the fold. Place chopsticks in the middle of the paper lengthwise, aligning the bottom of the chopsticks with the fold.

5. Wrap the collar around the chopsticks. The decorative part of the chopsticks should be above the collar. Make a crisp crease.

6. Fold over the right side of the paper over the chopsticks. Fold over the left side of the paper over the chopsticks. Adjust so that the chopsticks are smugly wrapped. Make sure the bottom is even. Wrap around left side to the back. If desired, put a little bit of adhesive to hold the flap down. Think of how you wrap a robe around you. It will be similar to what you just did.

Obi:
1. Cut a strip of lightweight metallic gold cardstock 3 1/2 inches by 7/8 inches.
2. Placing the piece landscape direction where it is longer side to side and shorter from top to bottom, fold the long edges to the middle so that the two edges meet.

3. Wrap the obi around the kimono about an inch below the collar. Move it to where it looks pleasing to you. Add adhesive to secure in place.

4. Take the Mizuhiki cord and wrap around the obi various times. Make a square knot in front of the obi and cut excess Mizuhiki. (Tie right over left and left over right to make the knot).

This will look lovely at your next Asian themed dinner!
