Clay Kimono Decoration

Brenda Marks - Clay Kimono

by Brenda Marks

Supplies

  • Polymer clay
  • Pasta machine (or equipment to work with clay)
  • Clay blade (or similar)
  • Oven to bake clay
  • 6" x 5" matt board
  • Decorative paper
  • Sakura paper punch
  • Character stamp
  • Glue

Directions

  1. Create a mokume gane cane (see instructions on various websites including http://www.glassattic.com/polymer/mokumegane.htm)
  2. Roll out a thin layer of background clay (in this case, Sculpey Premo Alizarin Crimson and Pearl blended together) and lay thin slices of the cane on the background. Run the sheet through the pasta machine (or use a brayer) to ensure the layers are stuck together.
  3. Cut out the kimono shape (see sketch) and stamp image (Hanko) on kimono using Brilliance ink.
  4. Bake according to manufacturer's directions and press under a book while cooling. Lay a blank sheet of printer paper over the clay to prevent it from sticking to the book.
  5. Sand the piece as necessary to remove any rough edges. Seal with a thin layer of Future Floor finish to bring out the depth of the mokume gane work.
  6. Create background by cutting matt board or book board to 5" x 6". This piece was first covered with a decorative scrapbook-type paper. Then a sheet of red mulberry was painted on both sides with gel medium. (This makes the paper slightly translucent.) The mulberry paper was applied over the decorative paper to create a subtle background. Punches (Carl Craft) and stamps (Hero Arts) were added.
  7. Punch holes and set eyelets in the background and add ribbon or wire.
  8. Glue the kimono onto the background.
